Out in left field – The Fielder by Merchant & Mills

August 18, 2015

The summer goal of ‘learning to sew properly’ has been pretty successful and I have been falling behind on blogging my sewing makes as I’ve been in a bit of a frenzy since I realised I can actually sew reasonably well.

I will start catching up with my latest FO as, of course, this is the one I am currently most proud of. ;-P

I took a little bike ride the other day down the Sussex coast to the gorgeous little town of Rye and naturally had to stop in to Merchant & Mills to ‘say hello to a friend’. Ahem.

Always a dangerous shop to enter, that day was no exception. After trying on the sample in shop I walked out with their new The Fielder pattern and the materials to make the top version in a luscious whiter than white washed Irish linen!

I could barely wait until I got home to start it and washed, ironed and cut the fabric out that night. This was my first attempt at working with knit fabric and a sewing machine and I was pretty nervous, but in the end it was just as simple as woven fabric. A huge realisation as now the possibilities for what I can make have doubled. Hah!

This top was so simple it was done to perfection the next day and I wore it out on the weekend! The heavy linen is perfect for a breezy day when you need a little bit more coverage and I love how the linen crinkles into worn-in goodness.

If going to the store wasn’t bad enough for temptation, I just saw a new video Merchant & Mills have made for their new workbook designs! Check this moody baby out:

How tempting are these shots??? I’ve already made several of these designs, but seeing them all on moving bodies makes SUCH a difference. Want to make them all now.

There aren’t enough hours in the day for knitting and sewing! ;-?
